The 6th Wounded Warrior Sailing Regatta (WWSR) was held on Saturday, September 12th in our nation’s “Sailing Capital,” Annapolis, Maryland at the National Sailing Hall of Fame (NSHOF) dock with sailboats provided by the Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) and wounded warriors coming from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, The Connected Warrior Foundation, and Warrior Events.
The sailing regatta offers wounded warriors and their family members an opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing in competitive races in Annapolis harbor with the support of warrior and disabled sailing organizations. The NSHOF has been the home port of the event for several years as they work to expand the WWSR to their member yacht and sailing clubs around the country.
CRAB operates four Freedom 20’s custom outfitted with seating to accommodate mobility challenged sailors. Wounded warriors in wheelchairs have been provided access to sailing that would be difficult if not impossible with standard sailboats. CRAB also provides wounded warriors with the opportunity to learn more about sailing throughout the summer months. In addition, the US Naval Academy has supported the event with sailboats and Midshipmen to greatly enhance the experience between the next generation of war fighters/peacekeepers and our nation’s wounded warriors.
With the support of The Connected Warrior Foundation and Warrior Events, the participation in the WWSR has expanded beyond Walter Reed to the entire region. The WWSR is fortunate to have this relationship with these important organizations because of their mission to enhance the lives of wounded warriors and their families through events like the sailing regatta.
The support for the WWSR has grown over the past several years and includes a wide variety of volunteers who ensure that the races and logistics are perfectly timed and executed throughout the day.
